  • Sharni Jayawardena is a Freelance writer/editor based in Colombo. She is currently (since October 2003) Associate, Basic Needs-a development organization focusing on mental health.
  • From January 2000 to September 2003, she was Associate Editor and Television Producer, Young Asia Television; Series Producer, Mihisara-a weekly television programme on the Environment; Editor and writer, Mihisara Text-a weekly newspaper supplement on the Environment and Guest Editor and writer, Options-a quarterly magazine published by the Women and Media Collective
  • She was Series Producer, Frames of Change-a television programme series highlighting innovative developmental and social initiatives from across Asia (1997 - 1999).
  • She was Communications Manager, Intermediate Technology Development Group, Sri Lanka Office (1992 - 1997) In addition to helping develop a communications strategy for ITDG, both in Sri Lanka and internationally, and providing communications support to projects, she was editor of Hydronet-a newsletter on micro-hydropower development and E-net-a magazine on alternative energy applications.
  • Previously she had been Managing Editor, Pravada (1991 - 1992). Pravada (which recently changed its name to Polity) is a quarterly magazine on Sri Lankan politics and current affairs published by the Social Scientists' Association; Freelance features writer, The Sunday Times, Colombo (1991/92); Television Producer, Editor, Writer, Worldview International Foundation (1981 - 1991); and Reporter, The Ceylon Observer (1979)
  • For the Media South Asia project, Sharni Jayawardene researched and wrote a Country Profile of the Media in Sri Lanka and interviewed leading media practitioners and observers on issues of cultural influence, and broadcasting policy and practice in Sri Lanka in the satellite age.
